On the whole, this book is a delightful and quick read which is a must for anyone interested in The Game of Authors, in the history of games, or in the literature of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. I’m also impressed to see just how much attention was given to female authors. “Above and beyond the pictures, this book includes a wealth of information, including brief biographies of the more obscure authors from various editions, many with excerpts from their works, and a number of complete poems, as well. Collectors will enjoy the opportunity to see so many Authors Card Games from a private collection never seen before in one location. It is an invaluable reference work for researchers and libraries. This historical book is for everyone interested in card games in general, and especially about the Authors Card Game. The book also includes Authors Card Games from foreign language publishers, and other card games that employ the Authors method of game play. The main section of the book reproduces the cards fronts and backs, portraits of the authors, and the charming box covers. A selection of published writings from 19 th century authors are included for the readers’ enjoyment. The next section presents four different editions of the 1861 Authors Card Game. The Authors Compendium book is divided into five sections, starting with the Dr. Games Systems also presents selected poems and popular phrases from forty 18 th and 19 th century authors. Her final novel Morning at Jalna appeared in 1960 when she was 81. She ended up writing 16 Jalna novels covering a century in the life of a family called the Whiteoaks and their various generations in a fictional locale in Southern Ontario. Its subsequent publication in 1927 brought de la Roche fame and fortune at the age of 48. Her third novel, Jalna, was submitted to the American magazine Atlantic Monthly, winning a $10,000 award. They were mild successes but nevertheless earned her little in income or recognition. Her first two proper novels, Possession (soon to be in Faded Page) from 1923 and Delight from 1926, were romantic novels. Her first published book, Explorers of the Dawn, appeared in 1922, and was a fix-up of some previously published sketches, vignettes and stories rewritten.
